Return to Run Assessment

The strength assessment focuses on key muscle groups essential for running, including  hip strength, and lower body endurance. We will assess your ability to generate and maintain force during exercises like squats, lunges, bridges, and single-leg activities. This thorough assessment helps determine if your muscles can provide the stability and control needed for safe, efficient running, reducing the risk of injury or discomfort as you return to activity.

A diastasis recti screen is a crucial part of a "Return to Run" assessment during the postpartum period as it checks for the separation of the abdominal muscles, which can affect core stability and running mechanics. If undetected or unaddressed, diastasis recti can lead to issues like low back pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, and inefficient movement patterns. Screening ensures that any separation is properly managed with tailored exercises to rebuild core strength and support a safe, effective return to running.

A pelvic floor assessment is vital in a postpartum "Return to Run" evaluation as the pelvic floor plays a key role in supporting the bladder, uterus, and rectum, as well as stabilizing the core during running. Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken these muscles, leading to issues like urinary leakage, pelvic pain, or pressure during high-impact activities. By assessing pelvic floor strength, coordination, and function, a physical therapist can create a customized plan to address any deficits, ensuring a safe and confident return to running while minimizing the risk of injury or discomfort. 

Based on the results of a postpartum "Return to Run" assessment, a personalized exercise program will typically focus on rebuilding core and pelvic floor strength, enhancing hip and glute stability, and gradually improving running-specific endurance. The program may start with foundational exercises like diaphragmatic breathing, pelvic floor activation, and core stabilization drills. As strength and control improve, it would progress to more dynamic movements like single-leg exercises, plyometrics, and running drills to safely reintroduce impact. The goal is to gradually build up your body’s resilience, coordination, and power to ensure a smooth and confident return to running.
